In Ayurveda, there are a lot of medicinal herbs that are commonly found in our kitchen. Today we will discuss one such magical herb GINGER, which can be used to cure many common health problems.
Importance Of Ginger
In our childhood, when there was not much use of food processor etc, our mothers were used to cut the fresh ginger pieces in each and every food, like in pulses, in rajma, moong daal, chickpeas etc’
It would have been the reason for sweet clashes in-between moms and kids, not to use that, as children usually don’t likethe slightly bitter taste of it.

But our mothers were aware of the miraculous health benefits of this herb.
Even my son doesn’t like it, so it has become a practice for me to add grounded garlic cloves and this herb to prevent clash at home. But I can’t deprive of my son with this multi-purpose healthy herb.
So let’s have a brief knowledge of Ginger.
It is a common ingredient that is used in Asian as well as Indian cuisine.
But in Ayurveda, it is used from ancient time for many health benefits like a digestive problem, in cough and cold, in knee pains etc.
The most commonly used part of the plant for medicinal purposes is the root or underground stem that is called as Rhizome.
It can be consumed fresh, dried grounded as a Spice, also used in the form of juice.
It belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, It is commonly harvested in India, Indonesia, and Australia.
Constitution of Ginger
It is known as Ayurvedic Maha Drug. Many scientific types of research also confirm this. It contains all the nutrients needed for the body.
100 gm of Fresh ginger contains
81% of water,
2.5% fibre and
Apart from this, it contains many nutrients including iron, calcium, iodine, chlorine, folic acid and vitamins like Vitamin C and B12.
It is also a strong antiviral.
The characteristic fragrance and flavor of it result from volatile oils like zingerone, shogaols and gingerols flavouromprise 1-3% of the weight of fresh herb.
Storage of Ginger
Being infused with volatile oils special care should be taken to keep its properties to the maximum.
Fresh herb can be stored in a plastic bag that is packed tightly in the refrigerator, and peel and grate it just before use and Add it to any dish of your choice for extra flavour.
Now Let us discuss the benefits of ginger.
Benefits of Ginger
It is very beneficial in cough. It can be consumed in powdered form with an equal quantity of honey twice a day. This will be very beneficial in cough and it will also relieve a sore throat.
In less of appetite
If someone is feeling full and have less appetite, regular consumption of it will get rid of the problem of appetite. Consume fresh herb pieces with lemon.
In Nausea and vomiting
In case of the feeling of vomiting or repeatedly vomiting, it can be consumed in juice form.
Grate it and squeeze it with clean hands to get its juice, two teaspoons of ginger juice with onion juice will stop vomiting. Grated remnants of it can be consumed by adding lemon to eat.
cholesterol reducing properties in it prevents blood clots formation, and the anti-fungal and anti-cancer properties of its volatile oil are somehow considered to be helpful in cancer.
In knee pains and other diseases
It is also used as medicine for knee pains. Its consumption can be done in the treatment of rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, cervical spondylitis.
●Eating it destroys the harmful bacteria of the mouth.
●Drinking its juice and water in equal quantity does not cause heart-related diseases.
Harmful Effects :
It is having heat effect. Those people who are Pita dosh dominated body will not be able to digest it especially during the summer season
It should not be consumed in by the patients of diseases such as leprosy, jaundice, fever, body bleeding.
So the use of it should be done in moderation in pita dosh predominant body type and diseases.
Other than these, GINGER is a boon to us from Ayurveda being its use in various diseases.
