Nowadays high level of cholesterol has become the main cause of heart diseases, a major Lifestyle disorder and 80% of the people above 45 years of age are getting affected by this in one way or the other.

In today’s time, although everyone is aware of these factors, my emphasis is to remind you that apart from your busy life, try to change your lifestyle a bit to prevent you from higher levels of cholesterol thereby decreasing the rate of heart diseases.

As daily we have seen that heart disease has become prevalent in the age of 30s.

So now let’s discuss the Modern as well as Ayurvedic perspective of cholesterol and its prevention and treatment according to Ayurveda.

What is cholesterol

•It is a cheesy fat-like substance found in our body. It is made up of a Lipoprotein.

•It is produced in the liver.

•Its main action is to build cell membranes, bile acids, synthesis of hormones and synthesis of vitamin D with the sunshine we get.

Types of Cholesterol

It is of three types

1.LDL  Low-Density Lipoprotein

This is also called bad cholesterol.
It accounts for most of our body’s cholesterol.

Its high levels can raise the risk of heart disease and stroke by building plaques in blood vessels and making them narrow, called atherosclerosis. That is the main cause of heart disease

2.HDL  High-Density Lipoprotein

It is also called good cholesterol it absorbs the extra fat in the body back to the liver and liver metabolises it to be stored for use when needed.

3. Triglycerides

This type of cholesterol is mainly formed by excess carbohydrates taken by us.

When the calories are taken more than the calories burned, triglycerides may be high.

Levels in the body

Normal values for Adults

•Total cholesterol levels

Normal   less than 200 milligrams per                                      deciliter

Normal 100 milligram per deciliter

Borderline 150 -199 milligram per                                              deciliter

High   200- 499 milligrams per deciliter

Very high 500 milligrams per deciliter

According to Ayurveda

This lipoprotein is compared with medo dhatu that plays an important role in lubrication and support of mainly circulation channels in the body which function to carry nutrients and waste products from distant cells.

In Ayurveda, seven dhatus or body tissues are explained.
One is Medo Dhatu.

According to Ayurveda, all the srotas that are compared with veins and arteries carrying blood to and from the heart should remain flexible and elastic to keep our body healthy. Medo Dhatu or this lipoprotein helps to lubricate and support this srotas.

A healthy Lifestyle and healthy diet keep our body in balance.

But due to consuming high saturated fat food, unhealthy food or high-calorie food in excess and no exercise, the Agni as described by Ayurveda, and can be compared to the metabolic fire of our body becomes weak.

Due to this weak Agni, all the excess and healthy food are taken by us is converted into Ama or metabolic leftovers in the form of toxins. These have the tendency to deposit in fat tissues and blocking and damaging the srotas.

These blocked and damaged srotas leads to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides causing heart diseases.

So, friends, this is all about cholesterol and the causes of its related problems.

Symptoms

Apparently, no any specific symptoms may be found even in high levels.

But due to the toxins present in the body, there may be a feeling of.

•Fatigue
•Weight Gain
•Stomach Distension
•Poor Appetite
•Aching pain
•Heart Pain

Blood Test

Specific diagnose of higher levels, is done by blood test.

It’s mine advise to screen your body for this test called as Lipid Profile, to be done at the age of 25 years for the first time (if you don’t feel any problem before that)
then almost yearly to screen out any changes in levels.

This will help to be aware of your daily healthy diet and exercise soon, much before any symptom or disease attacks your body.

Now let us discuss Diet and Lifestyle

We can alter a very little in our daily routine and can lead to a very happy healthy life

Number 1

Control the portions less amount of food having less oil and low-calorie food will help to keep our levels within normal range.

Number 2

Munch upon the food which can be digested easily. Be careful with proper digestion and excretion and, no indigestion.

Number 3

It’s very necessary to have regular food timings to keep our metabolism in pace.

Number 4

Quit smoking and drinking or it should be in moderation.

Number 5

Yoga Asan and some stretching exercises are the best to consume the calories we have taken and to keep our digestion proper.

So very common exercises to keep our cholesterol levels in pace can be,

Surya Namaskar
Vajrasan
Shalabh Aasan
Padmasan
Pranayam

Proper use of these yoga exercises will help to keep us healthy.

As in Ayurveda, this high lipoprotein is the increased medo dhatu

And Ayurveda considers that Medo Dhatu imbalance occurs due to kafa dosha
So pacifying kafa Dosha can be an effective remedy to lower the levels.

For this astringent foods can be added to pacify kafa dosha, thereby balancing medo dhatu thereby keeping our levels in balance.

We should take the foods including

Pulses like

Split moong dal
Lentils
Dried beans

Fruits like

Citrus fruits
Apple
Pears
Papaya

Vegetables like

Spinach
Carrots
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Cabbage
Cucumber
Radish

Grains like

Quinoa
Oats
Multigrain flour

Oils like

Olive Oil
Mustard Oil
Pure Ghee

Spices like

Black Pepper
Coriander
Turmeric
Fennel
Ginger powder
Cumin
Cinnamon

Nuts like

Walnuts
Almonds

•Herbs like

~Very useful garlic 2-3 cloves chew with water, empty stomach.

~Amla as a whole fresh Amla
Or powdered Amla on a daily basis

~Tulsi 3-4 leaves daily

~Curry leaves in different foods

~Mint leaves in the form of chutney

We should avoid

An excess amount of saturated fat like

•Cheese
•Butter
•Creams
•Palm Oil
•Fried Food

So dear friends, it was all about Cholesterol, its types, causes, symptoms of exercise, and diet.

According to a new study, cholesterol levels may be as high as 600 milligrams per deci millimetre can be considered normal.

But for this, my personal advice is

It’s always our duty, not to treat our body like a dustbin, to live a long healthy life.
My advice is that everything should be consumed in moderation so that we don’t overload our body, our organs our system to work hard and get fatigued soon.

•Choose your meal wisely.

•Spare some time for Yoga or some other exercise for at least 30 minutes  a day

•Eat healthy fruits, vegetable, snacks, grains.

•Stay away from saturated fats and Stay Healthy.
