Each of us has a unique personality and different characteristics of our body. Ayurveda, answers this factor by means of body type Vata, pitta and kafa.

Know Body Type

◆Some people are thin whatever they eat
◆On the other hand, some always complain to gain weight, in spite of diet control
◆Some have more sleep requirements than others.
◆Some people are always happy others, feel low without any reason.
◆Some are overactive others feel quite lazy.

◆Some feel hungry every two hours and others have not much food requirements.

Ayurveda has all the answers to this unique personality of a person, in terms of Vata, Pitta and kafa.

All that is present in the world, exists inside us. Our body includes the exact same five components ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth) at different levels, which can be responsible to our Prakriti or body type.

These components create three dynamic energies called doshas as Vata Pitta and kafa and due to these, we get our unique characteristics.

All these exist in every cell of the body together with mind and soul.

Which are the 3 Doshas

In Sanskrit, Dosha means

Something that can be out of balance.

◆According to Ayurveda theory, the characteristics of Doshas keep on changing constantly keeping up the dynamic balance.

◆The Doshas are biological energies which are located throughout the body and brain.

◆They perform all of the physical and mental processes within us and provide every individual with a separate pattern for his or her physical and psychological wellness.

According to Ayurveda, Prakriti or type of a particular person is inherent to him.

Our physique is determined during conception, according to qualities of semen and ovum.

It can be compared with the genetic makeup of a person, in today’s concept.

How Tridoshas spread in our system.

The Tridoshas exist all around the body.  But each Dosha has some particularly dominant place in us.

If we consider us physically into three components

Location of  vata Is from the belly button to the tip, urogenital system, hands feet, colon and mainly concentrated at the rectum.

Location of pitta is in the centre part, involving chest and naval/belly button including in liver, spleen, gall bladder, stomach, duodenum, pancreas.

Location of kafa is in the top part of our body, from head to chest, including sinuses, nostrils, throat and bronchi.

Based upon the blend of the five components in the action of these Doshas vary.  and is responsible for a different physique and personality.

The composition of doshas according to five components

Vata वात  Ether+Air
Pitta पित्त. Fire+Water

Kafa कफ  Earth+Water

The Doshas are lively energies which continuously change in response to our

●physiological activities,
●ideas, emotions,
●and the food that we consume the,
●seasons and
●some other modifications that affect our body and mind.

 If the percentage of Dosha inside us is like with that we born with, then we will be healthy and lively.

When there’s the difference between both of these sates, it indicates the state of imbalance, which contributes to several diseases within our body.

 In Ayurveda, It’s called as a Vikriti That’s reverse of Prakriti.

There are 3 main dosha states described, in Ayurveda science

Number 1

Decreased State

It is a state when a particular dosha is present in less amount than the normal.

Number 2

Increased State
It is a state when a particular dosha is present in more amount than the normal.


Number 3

Balanced State
It is a state in which all three doshas are present in equal amount.

This is said to be the best state for health.

A person having three doshas in equal proportions is a fully healthy person.

The main aim of Ayurveda therapy is to keep these three in a balanced state by treating decreased or increased state.

Characteristics of Vata  Dosha

●Vata is mainly composed of air and Ether or space components.

It has the following qualities.


An Individual with Vata dosha has the Following character

●Slim body framework
●doesn’t gain weight easily.
●Dry, coarse, dark complexion  cracked skin
●Hair dry and splitting
●typically rapid in performing any actions
●Has inconstant or bad appetite.
●Physical functioning capacity significantly less,
● resistance to illness generally less.
●Prefers hot or warm climate and food.
●Sweats significantly less,
and contains inconstant thirst.
Irregular bowel habits.
●Has mild sleep with dreams
●Prone to stress,
•depression and contains inconsistent character.

Vaat predominating age is described as 55years and more.

Vaat predominating season is Autumn and beginning of Winter.

Vaat dominates from 2.00am to 6.00am and

from 2.00pm to 6.00pm.

So why is the time before 6.00am is best for meditation
and mind after lunch is most active.

In the humans, Vata is represented by transportation of air, blood, food, impulses, thoughts and wastes.

Characteristics of Pitta dosha

It is mainly made up of water and fire components.

Its properties are

पितम सस्नेहम तीक्ष्ण उष्णम लघु विसरम
सरम द्रवम ।

सस्नेहम slightly oily

तीक्ष्ण piercing, penetrating deep tissues

उष्णम Heated

लघु light
विसरम smelling not good
सरम having mobility

द्रवम liquid

An Individual with Pitta dosha has
the next body characters as

●Moderate body framework.
●delicate skin
●red complexion and warm to touch.
●Good appetite.
●Sensitive to heat.
●Intolerance to warm climate and food.
●They prefer cold climate and food.
●Excessive perspiration and frequently feel hungry.
●Hair is tender, susceptible to premature greying and hair thinning.
●wise and possess sharp memory.
●short tempered, courageous, jealous,
●Commanding nature.

Pitta dominates from 10.00am to 2.00pm and to 2.00am

Qualities of Kapha Dosha

Kapha is of earth and water elements.

स्निग्ध: शीतो गुरु मन्द: शलक्ष्नो मरीतसन स्थिर कफ:

स्निग्ध oil
शीतो  cold
गुरु heavy
मन्द: slow
शलक्ष्नो  smooth
मरीतसन slippery

स्थिर stable

An individual who has Kapha dosha has the features

●Enormous, broad framework,
●the tendency to gain weight.
●Thick skin, soft, smooth, fair complexion
●Has great stamina but lazy
●Deep voice.
●Moderate perspiration,
low thirst.
●Moderate appetite
●Deep sleep.
●Large eyes
●Hair thick, greasy, wavy and dark-coloured.
●Calm, cool, joyous, sweet nature.

Kafa dominates from 6.00am to 10.00am and
6.00pm to 10.00pm

These are a few of the features of each dosha.

When the doshas are out of balance, they can create various health issues.

Imbalance of doshas may be brought on by stress, psychological trauma, in addition to poor diet and lifestyle options.

These disturbances trigger an increase in at least one of these doshas, ruining the pure state of inner stability of doshas represented by our own constitution.
