Panchakarma, a major part of our ancient alternate system of medicine, Ayurveda, has great importance in today’s context to treat many chronic ailments when practised by using proper methods and precautions, indicated from person to person.
Panchakarma is given a unique place in most of the ancient Ayurvedic texts. Ayurveda Guru Charak, the writer of the most significant historical text on internal medicine, Charak Samhita, has clarified a broad use of Panchakarma treatment for mostly all of the significant diseases.
Two distinct segments, Kalpa Sthanam, and Siddhi Sthanam at Charak Samhita explain the facts of specific decoctions and other preparations used for Panchakarma treatment.
Panchakarma contains three components namely
●Steps Prior to the true operation of purification starts,there’s a need to prepare the body in prescribed approaches to promote the body to remove the toxins.
1 Pachan or digestion
Specific Ayurveda medication is given to the patient to assist ones ama pachan or digestion.
It is an oil massage. Oil is applied to the full body with a special kind of massage and medicated oils that aid the toxins to move towards the GI tract.Oil massage additionally makes the shallow and deep tissues soft by absorption of medicated oils.
It is sweating or perspiration and is given daily immediately after the snehan. A herbal mix may be added to the vapours to loosen the toxins out of the system. Sweden liquefies the toxins and increases the flow of toxins to the GI tract. After three to seven times of snehan and Sweden, the doshas become loosened and can be easily removed out of the system.
A specific panchakarma way is then used based on the person’s constitution and disease, Prakriti and vikriti, respectively. Panchakarma includes Five Primary Shodans.
Pashchat karma or post-procedure measures. It includes
1. Sansrjan karma specific diets are followed after every specific procedure.
2. Dhumpana medicated smokes.These are given to patients mainly after Nasya karma.
3. Also, there are some do’s and don’ts to follow these procedures.
Now let’s discuss in detail the Pradhan Karmas, used for cleansing the system.
Vaman- curative vomiting or emesis
If there is congestion in the lungs resulting in recurrent attacks of bronchitis, colds, asthma or a cough, the Ayurvedic remedy is curative, man, to remove the kapha inducing the extra mucus.
To begin with,
●following the snehan and Sweden,
●three to four glasses of ginger or salt are administered,
●then nausea is stimulated by massaging the tongue that activates the nausea centre through the gag reflex.
●An individual may alternatively choose two to three glasses of salt water that can also aggravate kapha then rub on the tongue to cause nausea.
When the mucus is discharged the individual will feel immediately relieved. It’s very likely that congestion, wheezing and breathlessness will evaporate and that the throat will get clear.
Therapeutic vomiting can be suggested in chronic asthma, asthma, chronic cold, lymphatic congestion, chronic indigestion and oedema.
Neem leaves decoction
●many kapha type ailments
●good for pitta nausea, headache and nausea
●can help release blocked emotions
Can not be used for
●Under age 12 or above age 65
●menstruation pre-menstrual period (1 week before )
●a sensitive or delicate individual with too much anxiety, grief or stress
●heart ailments during vata season
It is a treatment where ama or toxins accumulated in the body in the form of excess bile, that is stored in gallbladder, liver, or other organs, are evacuated out with the help of laxatives.
●Isbgol husk with warm milk
Indications for Virechan
●enlargement of the spleen
●internal worms burning sensation in the eyes
●inflammation of the eyes
Contra-Indications for Virechan
●bleeding from rectum
●foreign body in the stomach
●emaciation or weakness
Panchakarma is a vast system of Ayurveda, very effective and curing almost every disease when performed in a proper way.
