Now let’s describe the Ayurveda aspect of it, that can be very easily correlated with Amlapitta, a disease well described in Ayurveda.
Friends, as I have explained earlier, Ayurveda is a complete science, embracing each and everything described according to modern medicine.
The need is to recognize it, take the advantages of modern medicine to diagnose the condition, as these were not developed in ancient time, and treat it by Ayurveda pathy.
What is amlapitta
Post Contents
The word Amla Pitta is made up of two words
Amla and Pitta
The word Amla means acidic in nature
our ancient Acharya Charak described that
Pitta is one of our tridosha,
That is assumed to be liquid is nature and penetrating, bitter, hot and sour.
It is responsible for the digestion of food and our metabolism
thus amlapitta contributes to something which is acidic in nature.
That’s why it can be easily correlated with acidity, hyperacidity or GERD as described in modern medicine.
Causes of Amla Pitta
Mandagni or poor digestion is considered as the main reason behind Amla Pita
Mandagni causes the improper digestion of food resulting in a sort of fermentation like process.
This results in the production of excess acid or Amla
This excessive acid when mixed with food, it gets converted into a bitter substance called amla pitta
However, in Ayurveda, different Acharyas have their own views according to their own experiences.
Let us discuss a few causative factors of amla pitta as described by Acharya Kashyap
Virudh Aahar eating of foods of opposite qualities
Adhayashan (अधयशन) Consuming food before the previously eaten food is digested
Guru Aahar, Consumption of heavy food is difficult to digest
Sleeping immediately after taking food that is hot in potency, fermented Stale, processed and deep-fried in nature.
Suppression of natural urges just like urination and defecation that vitiate vata and spread the vitiated Amla in the body
According to Madhava nidana, a famous Ayurveda literature
If a person has a predominantly Pitta Prakriti and he consumes food that is sour, pitta aggravating and of incompatible nature, hyperacidity is produced.
Amal Pita can be easily correlated for acidity or hyperacidity
Allopathy considers three main culprits of hyperacidity as hurry, worry, and curry
we can see in today’s modern life we are always in a hurry, eating even
●while walking,
●watching TV,
●listening to mobile phones,
●reading or
●even driving.
We can frequently see people eating sandwiches or rolls while driving.
Our digestive system is not ready for this as our body is in fight or flight mode this time.
Mental tension and worry also have a bad effect on our digestive system.
we can see the results of this, as the people are frequently suffering from heartburn, hyperacidity or dyspepsia, this problem is more in cities because of the more busyness of the city life
But nowadays villages and small towns are also not untouched as the people have given up the natural lifestyle and eat a lot of junk food being the easy availability everywhere.
Moreover, the use of oily, spicy, packaged, Stale, processed food is aggravating the problem.
Excess use of a fridge is also the culprit.
We cook in bulk and store in the fridge and consume little, over many days
This food becomes unhealthy and produces hyperacidity and indigestion.
Types of amlapitta
In Ayurveda, amlapitta can be classified according to the following factors
◆The basis of the movement of Pitta that is upward or downward
◆The nature of the tridosha
◆Also on whether the disease is curable or incurable, sadhya(साध्य) and asadhya(असाध्य)
1. On the basis of the movement of
Udharvag amalapitta (उध्र्वग अम्लपित्त)
in this there is
upward movement of vitiated pitta
Adhoga amlapitta (अधोग अम्लपित्त)
In this, there is a downward movement of Pitta
2. On the basis of nature of doshas
Pitta associated
with vata dosha
with kafa dosha
with vata kafa dosha
Shleshmaka श्लेष्मक पित्त
Manifestations of amlapitta
Udharvag type
Vomiting associated with blood the vomitus may be yellow-green Black Or blue.
Adhoga type
●Reduced digestive capacity
●Fainting trembling of the body
●Yellow discoloration of body
●Burning sensation in soles and palms.
●Feeling of heat insoles and palm.
3. On the basis of whether the disease is curable or incurable
Amlapitta that is newly produced is easily curable.
Amlapitta that is long lasting or chronic is curable with great difficulty.
Lakshan(लक्षण)or clinical features of Amla Pitta as described in Ayurveda
●Heartburn
●Bitter or sour burping
●A chronic headache because of Amla pitta
●Burning sensation in the whole body
●Loss of appetite
●Heaviness in stomach
●Bleeding from nose
●Dryness of mouth and feeling of thirst
●foul smell from body sometimes from armpits
Season also affects the vitiation of this पित्त Dosha as it is more vitiated in Sharad or autumn season that is January, February, and March.
How to cure Pitta?
Treatment of amlapitta
There are three types of therapies described in Ayurveda to treat amlapitta
1.Panchakarma or purification therapy
This is very effective alone but when combined with palliative treatment or drug therapy after it provides excellent results.
Panchakarma is a very effective therapy of Ayurveda as described in mine this article.
In Udharvag type
Vaman (emesis) is done
Vaman expells पित्त and kafa Dosha from the upper part of the digestive system
It is done with yashtimadhu kada
However, depending upon the constitution age and condition of the patient different materials may be used for Vaman Karma.
In Adhoga type
Virechan is done (laxative)
For this purpose, Triphala kadha or amaltas (Cassia fistula) is used
Hair also choice depends upon the condition of the patient.
For detailed procedure of Vaman and Virechan, you can read my this article.
These procedures should be done under the expert medical supervision only
In very chronic cases Anuvasan Basti followed by Asthapen Basti (ayurvedic enemas) should be given.
For detailed procedure of Basti, you can read this article.
2.Palliative therapy or drug therapy
It should be given after completing the cleansing or purification of the body through Panchkarma
However, in mild cases, there is no need of Panchakarma therapy and directly palliative therapy can be given.
This therapy alone has very good results in mild cases.
Ayurvedic palliative therapy has a broad range starting from simple home remedies to different drug therapies and gold formulations (ras aushadhis).

Ayurveda always stress upon that prevention is better than cure
Acharya Sushruta described that, to get rid of disease we should avoid the factors creating problems.
Nidan Parivarjanam
निदान परिवर्जनम।
It can be followed by leading a healthy life and adapt to leave the factors which are causing the problem.
