NEET is an all India level general entrance examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for admission to MBBS and BDS courses at the undergraduate level.

In the spirit of One Country One exam, the Government of India introduced NEET to replace many different medical examinations across the country including AIPMT (All India Pre-Medical Test). Up to this year, 2019, AIIMS and JIPER exams were conducted separately but now from 2020, these two exams will also be conducted under NEET.

The required academic qualification for this exam is that the candidate has passed his class 12 or equivalent of science stream – Physics, Chemistry, Biology / Biotechnology, and Mathematics as the main subject with minimum marks of 50 percent. It is the only medical UG entrance exam conducted in an offline mode i.e. with the use of pen and paper.

The National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) is conducted for those students who want to study any Graduate Medical Course (MBBS), Dental Course (BDS) and other paramedical courses like BAMS, BHMS, Veterinary et. Or postgraduate course MD / MS program. Various government and private colleges across the country also accept admissions through NEET scores.

Central Board Of Secondary Education

It is a National Level general Entrance Examination conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for admission to medical colleges in India. Students who want to study undergraduate medical courses like

  • MBBS,
  • BDS,
  • BAMS,
  • BHMS, etc. have to pass this exam.

Types

It is of two types,

  • NEET-UG and
  • NEET-PG.

1. NEET-UG

It is for students, who want to study undergraduate medical courses like

  • MBBS,
  • BDS,
  • AIIMS
  • JIPMER
  • BAMS
  • BHMS
  • BUMS

2. NEET-PG

It is for medical graduates who want to study postgraduate medical courses like

  • MD and
  • MS.

AIPMT

NEET has replaced the AIPMT, that is,

All India Pre Medical Test

and other medical entrance examinations conducted by states or individual colleges.

This has saved students time, energy and money as earlier they had to fill different forms for various medical entrance examinations in India.

However, some famous medical colleges like

  • AIIMS,
  • JIPMER, and
  • PGIMER

were still conducting their medical entrance examinations, up to 2019, as they established it under different laws, but now from 2020, AIIMS and JIPMER, these two exams will also be conducted under NEET.

NEET UG

NEET

This Undergraduate Examination was conducted for the first time in May 2016.

Date Of Exam

This exam is conducted normally on the First Sunday of May month every year.

Mode Of Exam

This exam is conducted in,

  • A single session and,
  • An offline mode (pen and paper).

It has a duration of 3 hours and multiple-choice questions are asked. The mediums of the exam are,

  • English,
  • Hindi, and

many other regional languages such as

  • Tamil,
  • Telugu,
  • Oriya, etc.

Paper Pattern

The paper contains three sections-

  • 45 questions in physics,
  • 45 questions in chemistry, and
  • 90 questions in biology (botany and zoology).

So, there are a total of 180 questions, and each question is of four marks, so in total, the exam is of 720 marks.

Negative Marking

  • For attempting a correct answer, the candidate will get 4 marks, and,
  • For performing each wrong answer, 1 mark (25%) will be deducted.

The result is declared on its official site in the month of June.

NEET-UG Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have passed 12th standard with,

  • Physics,
  • Chemistry, and,
  • Biology and
  • Attained the age of 17 years,

are eligible for this exam.

For the general category,

  • the upper age limit is 25 years.
  • It is deducted for five years for SC, ST and OBC categories.

NEET PG

Postgraduate medical courses like MD and MS,

  • This exam is conducted in online mode (computer-based mode).
  • The time duration for the exam is 3 .5 hours.

The question paper is divided into three sections-

  • 50 questions in Part A,
  • Part B with 100 questions and
  • Part C with 150 questions.
  • It is held on a single day and in one session.
  • The language of the question paper is English.

NEET-PG Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility for this is as follows-

Candidate should have an,

  • MBBS degree or
  • Provisional MBBS passing certificate recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Candidate should have,

A permanent or provisional registration certificate of MBBS issued by the,

  • Medical Council of India (MCI) or
  • State Medical Council (SMD).

During the exam, candidates are required to take the MCI / SMC registration certificate to the examination center on the day of examination.

The applicant must have completed a mandatory one-year internship.
